REUNIFICATION 2024

SMALL TOURNEY, BIG IDEAS.

PROJECT DURATION: 13 DAYS (During full time work)

A trailer for a small, commercial video game tournament, taking place in Dublin, Ireland.

There was no prompt given by the commissioner for the graphical style of the commission, they instead asked me to develop a unique identity for the event that was unlike any other eSports event.

I chose for the trailer to revolve around Swiss Style design, specifically originating around the 1950s, due to its bold yet understated method of design that revolves purely on simple shapes and colours to create an evocative scene. Additionally, I chose Sault's song 'fear' due to its brooding and minimalist yet evolving sound as I believed the sound and visuals' fusion would truly make it stand out amongst other eSports events, which usually involve technological styles.

Many of the designs featured in the trailer directly reference artists such as Jean Widmer, Sascha Lore and Hans Neuberg. Due to the small scale of the event, the commissioner was very lax and encouraged me to develop my abilities in motion graphics rather than to be concerned about potential copyright issues; resultantly I used this commission as practice in regards to storyboarding and designing the motion of existing designs. To fairly credit the original artists for their works we transformed, the original post included credits for all referenced artists and pointed towards an additional follow up video that credited each artist as their work referenced appeared, while also displaying the original design besides the trailer.

Considering the originally minimal reach of the event's social media page (which began at 28 followers), the trailer performed fantastic, resulting in the live-event attaining 117 total in-person attendees. Additionally, the graphic designers for the event adopted the styling of the trailer and continued the promotional campaign for the event with a series of Swiss Style designs, for what would be the first Smash Bros tournament with this unique style of branding.
